For students
Check an essay, a term paper or a thesis before you hand it in
Paste a chapter or the whole essay, up to 2,000 words. The report shows which passages overlap with a source you can open, which passages carry indicators of machine-generated text, and which entries of your reference list could not be found. You see the same things a marker sees, before the marker does.
What you can check
- Essays and reflective writing
- Term papers and coursework
- Thesis and dissertation chapters
- Literature reviews
- Lab reports and case studies
- Reference lists on their own
What you get
Each matched passage is highlighted and linked to the web page or scholarly record it matches, with the share of your text it covers. Quotations the engine recognises are marked separately.
Each entry with a DOI or an identifier is matched against Crossref. An entry marked "not found" may contain a typing error or describe a work that does not exist; both are worth fixing before a marker finds them.
Paragraphs with features often seen in machine-generated text are listed with their score. An indicator is a prompt to look at the wording again; it is not a statement about how the text was written.
How to read the report
The overlap figure is not a plagiarism verdict
Common phrases, definitions, assignment wording and correctly cited quotations all produce overlap. Read each highlighted passage against its source and decide whether it is a quotation, a paraphrase that needs a citation, or your own wording that happens to coincide.
AI indicators have known false signals
Formulaic prose, text by writers whose first language is not English, and heavily edited text receive more indicators than average. The report never says that a text was generated; see the methodology for what the score measures.
Reference statuses
"Found" means a record matches. "Not found" and "DOI resolves to another work" mean the entry needs checking by hand. "Not checked" means the entry had no identifier the engine could look up, which is common for books and web pages.
What to do with the matches
- Cite or rewrite. A passage that matches a source and is not marked as a quotation needs either quotation marks and a citation, or a rewrite in your own words with the source cited.
- Fix or remove unverified references. Open each "not found" entry at the publisher or in a library catalogue. Correct the DOI, the year or the title; remove entries you cannot locate.
- Reconsider flagged passages. Where a paragraph carries indicators, read it aloud. Repetitive structure, vague claims and generic transitions are the usual causes; concrete detail and your own argument are the usual fix.
- Follow your institution’s rules on AI use. If you used an AI tool for grammar, translation or summaries and your course permits it, say so where the assignment asks. The report includes a neutral disclosure template.
