For journals
A screening report for the editorial office and the author at the moment of submission: text overlap with sources, indicators of machine-generated text, and the status of every reference. The same check that students, writers and researchers run on their own texts, with a workflow for the editorial office. For small and mid-sized journals that do not have a similarity-check subscription, or that need a second instrument for the reference list and AI indicators.
The editor sees sources, indicator counts and unverified references; the author receives the same report with the passages to review. No separate "detector score" that the author cannot see.
Reports follow COPE guidance: they give the editor grounds to ask a question, not a reason to reject. The methodology and its limitations are public, and AI figures are shown only from a detector validated for the language of the text.
Each entry of the reference list is matched against Crossref, with retraction notices flagged. Lists with entries that cannot be verified are a frequent sign of unreviewed machine-written text.
Manuscripts are not added to any comparison database and are deleted after 30 days. Processing takes place in the European Union.
How it works in the pilot
- The editorial office sends a manuscript or asks the author to run the check at submission; the report link is attached to the submission record.
- The editor reviews the sources, indicator counts and unverified references; the report includes suggested questions to the author where indicators are high.
- Where a journal asks for an AI-use statement, the author adapts the disclosure draft from the report for the Methods or Acknowledgements section.
Integration with Open Journal Systems (a plugin that runs the check from the submission workflow and stores the report with the submission) is in preparation. During the pilot, reports are exchanged by link and PDF.
What the pilot includes
- Up to 60 manuscripts a month for the duration of the pilot, at no cost.
- A short editorial note for the journal's authors on how the report is used in review.
- A review of false signals: the editorial office reports passages marked incorrectly, and the method is adjusted.
Pilot places are limited to a small number of journals so that each case can be reviewed by hand. Please state the editorial system you use and the approximate number of submissions.
Method and limitations: methodology. Authors can read how to prepare a manuscript on the page for researchers. The ASNAP platform for editorial offices (submissions, review, issues) is described at asnap.io.
